Shaping Meaning
Shaping meaning with negative spaces as well as positive, absence and presence, savoring what is lost and what is found.
~ June Julian
Shaping Meaning through cutout or silhouettes for me creates a sense of space that is either lost or wanted. My image Where You Are & Where You Are Not is about a sense of place where you wish you could be. I used cutouts but one could use silhouettes. The ‘wall’ of the image is where I am, and the cutout images within the wall are where I want to be. That is why my cutout images are located within those. I feel that this lesson would be very reflective for students.

This is a work in progress. This image is about how my partner and I feel about the city currently. With the hopes of spring we wish to get outside more and outside of the city. We feel trapped in the city. We want out!!!

In the first image, I love the way you used the depth of field in layers to create your positive and negative space.

I agree with Marie I love the first image and how you created this depth to the photograph by adding the photos in a way that is like a window into your life. I can’t wait to see how you push this concept more with other images.

The first image has fantastic layers. I look forward to seeing this take shape.

This is very intriguing project that students can relate to because they can make it about themselves. Would students take their own digital photos or appropriate them form the web?

I think they could have a combination... They will need to have at least one personal image with their figure in it, but the others could be a place representing where they are and where they want to be.

I love your use of the "Love Park" symbol into your third image. I think it is interesting that we Philadelphia natives know exactly where the real thing is located and what it looks like. I wonder how many people from other parts of the country and the world look at this symbol and know where it is from.
